Clients don’t mind you making money. They mind being misled. Here’s how to keep trust—and still stay profitable.
The “Three Quote” Mistake
On a recent call, a member shared how he pitched SEO to a client by presenting three quotes from different providers.
What he didn’t mention?
One of those providers was his own company.
The client picked that quote… not knowing it was the same person managing the strategy and the fulfillment.
It wasn’t malicious.
It was a freelance habit, trying to keep things clean, separate, and “professional.”
But here’s the lesson:
You don’t have to hide the margin to stay in integrity.
In fact, hiding it erodes trust faster than anything else.
Clients Respect Transparency
As a fractional CMO or web consultant, your job is to guide, not disguise.
That means:
- Explaining what needs to be done
- Sharing your recommendations clearly
- Offering services you trust, including your own
And being upfront about how things work.
When clients see you as the bridge between strategy and execution, they expect you to bring in trusted resources. They’re paying you to think, lead, and simplify.
Trying to hide that you profit from fulfillment? That’s what erodes the relationship.
Here’s the Better Way
If you’re offering SEO, say it.
If it’s your team doing the work, say that too.
And if they choose you, it should be because they trust you to deliver.
Because once trust is broken, it’s hard to sell anything else, no matter how good your strategy is.
Lead with Clarity. Close with Confidence.
The goal isn’t to make less.
It’s to be seen as someone worth paying more.
Consultants don’t hide the work. They own it.
And clients are happy to pay when the value is real and the relationship is solid.
