Why You’re Not Charging More — And How to Change That

Team LISClient Acquisition

Freelancers aren’t underpaid because of the market. They’re undercharging because of mindset.

Eric has been building websites since 2007. He’s talented. His clients love his design work. But after nearly two decades, he’s still charging $200 per page. Why?

Because of fear.

Fear that if he raises his prices, clients will say no. That if he charges what his work is worth, the business will dry up.

But here’s the truth most freelancers never hear:
Your pricing reflects your belief in your own value.

If you don’t believe you’re worth more, you’ll never ask for more. And even when you do, clients will feel the hesitation. They’ll smell the doubt. And they’ll pass.

The Real Problem Isn’t Clients — It’s Self-Belief

On the call, Eric admitted something powerful. Even if his dream client walked in the door, he wouldn’t feel confident saying a bigger number.

That honesty was gold.

Because it revealed what many designers are afraid to admit.
It’s not that they can’t find better clients.
It’s that they haven’t done the inner work to own their worth.

Here’s What Needs to Change

  1. Reconnect with your skills.
You’re not just a “designer.” You solve real business problems. You help people grow, convert, and get results. Own that.
  2. Break the cycle of survival pricing.
If your bills are $5,000 and your projects are $2,500, you need two every month just to survive. But if you charge $10,000, one client can cover your month, and then some.
  3. Attract better clients by becoming better yourself.
Clients will only value you to the degree that you value yourself. Raise your standard, and you’ll raise your client pool.
  4. Build boundaries.
If you’re working until 3am, answering calls all day, and being run around by “quick” changes and cousins with feedback, the issue isn’t the clients. It’s your process. Your rules. Or lack of them.

The Shift Starts With You

Raising your prices isn’t about charging random numbers.
It’s about raising your alignment.

Do you believe in the value you bring?
Are you confident that your work creates real outcomes?
Can you say your new price without flinching?

If not, the work is not in sales.
The work is in you.Ready to Grow Your Web Consulting Business?
